Tibet

   În viziunea occidentală, Tibetul a apărut în mod tradiţional ca un ţinut greu accesibil, însă în acelaşi timp fascinant într-un mod unic. De o factură profund buddhistă în toate aspectele sociale, culturale şi religioase ale vieţii, acesta a fost, până în 1959, dominat de o ierarhie monastică. În viziunea unora, aşa-numita Ţară a Zăpezilor a fost privită ca fiind originea unor misterioase fiinţe supraumane, mahatmas, care, din lăcaşurile lor secrete aflate în munţii Himalaya, oferă o ghidare mistică întregii umanităţi.
   Pe măsură ce sursele devin mai numeroase, o viziune mai realistă şi mai complexă a istoriei şi religiei tibetane capătă contur. Astfel, trebuie reţinute câteva aspecte principale.
În primul rând, buddhismul în Tibet este reprezentat de mai multe tradiţii, „ordine” monastice sau şcoli, fiecare dintre ele având câteva trăsături comune, dar care de asemenea şi diferă în aspecte semnificative. De acest lucru trebuie ţinut seamă atunci când sunt consultate mai multe surse, din moment ce istoriografia tradiţională tibetană (care este în mod invariabil o istoriografie religioasă) are tendinţa de a reflecta nişte viziuni mai mult sau mai puţin partizane ale autorilor.
   În al doilea rând, buddhismul nu este singura religie care trebuie luată în calcul. Buddhismul a pătruns în Tibet relativ târziu – probabil nu înainte de secolul VIII d. Ch. – şi a reuşit doar gradual să înlocuiască o religie indigenă bine întemeiată deja, care momentan încă este cunoscută doar fragmentar. În plus, începând cu secolul X sau XI, variatele ordine buddhiste au existat paralel cu o religie cunoscută sub numele de Bon, care în multe privinţe este aproape indistinctă de buddhism. Bon a reuşit să îşi menţină identitatea până în prezent. Rămâne, de asemenea, o vastă arie de ritualuri şi credinţe care nu sunt nici de factură buddhistă, nici Bon, dar care ar putea fi catalogate drept „religie populară”. Mai există, de asemenea, şi o redusă minoritate de tibetani musulmani.
În al treilea rând, trebuie reţinut faptul că Tibet este un termen cumva ambiguu. În contextul prezent, acesta poate fi folosit pentru a delimita o anumită arie etnică – ce include şi părţi din India şi Nepal – care împărtăşeşte o cultură şi o limbă comună, tradiţii religioase comune, şi, într-un sens mai extins, care împărtăşeşte o istorie comună. Aşa-numita Regiune Autonomă Tibetană Chineză cuprinde doar părţile vestice şi centrale ale Tibetului, inclusiv capitala Lhassa.
Termenul de lamaism este adesea folosit pentru a denumi religia tibetană. Tibetanii însă obiectează adesea cu privire la acest lucru, deoarece aceasta ar implica faptul că buddhismul în Tibet ar fi cumva diferit faţă de budhismul din alte părţi ale Asiei. Poate fi deci menţionat că termenul lamaism indică rolul important al lama-ului (tib., bla ma), ghidul religios sau expertul în religia tibetană, şi poate fi folosit în aceeaşi măsură atât în buddhism, cât şi în cazul religiei Bon. Cu toate acestea, ca termen ce intenţionează să circumscrie religia tibetană ca întreg, are totuşi limite şi poate duce la interpretări eronate
